When you get to spend your Sunday afternoons bookstore hopping. The happy happy sight of books makes me feel like a little kid again, with that twinkle in my eye. Question : Now that I am moving to another city, I would love to know some of your suggestions regarding bookstores I can visit in Delhi.
You know how we read about books and relate to the current scenario. Something of the kind happened to me while I browsed through the pieces in this book. The Alabama Abortion Ban has yet again strongly reminded us of why feminism is still needed and how the White Supremacists aren't exceptions to its needs. Needless to say, abortion is a personal choice and no government, law maker or as a matter of anyone else other than the person who is pregnant gets a say in it. However, more than often the people with power and privilege and an upper hand over their counterparts fail to grasp this. Our bodies sexualised, our existence objectified and our clothes victimised, we, women, have had to yet again fight tooth and nail for what should be basic human rights. It's Not About The Burqa, although talks about the hurdles and stigmas that a Muslim woman has to face in the world, however the voices ring true for all the women still being put through hell because of their gender. It's not about the Burqa, the kurta, the dupatta, the skirt or the bikini. It is about the human beings that we are beneath the layers of gender, religion, class, race or profession.
One of my favourite books from last month was this prized literary fiction that didn't make it to the @womensprize shortlist. Remembered is such an essential read and yet so underrated. I am ashamed of the fact that I hadn't heard of this book before the long list was announced. Because this book is so good that it definitely needs more attention. When a young man is admitted in the coloured section of the hospital in Philadelphia in the year 1910 after being brutally beaten, his mother narrates to him the story of where his ancestors were from and how they survived the disgustingly difficult odds of slavery, racism and prejudices to the current age. The book is hauntingly painful to say the least. The accounts of the torture and cruelties inflicted upon the slaves of the previous generations is nothing short of nightmares to us. @whyiwritebattlefelton is a tremendously good writer who brings to life the era that was before slavery was abolished in America. This book is a great addition to your #blackhistorymonth pile. Question : Which was your favourite read from last month?
Thankfully I have overcome my slump and I am reading good meaningful books too. One of them was this #gifted book from @bloomsburyindia . Good Talk is a graphical representation of many conversations that the author has with her son, her husband, her family, and friends. These conversations revolve around identity, race, politics, fitting in and most importantly compassion. I loved how easy it was to relate to the instances in the book and it is conversational structure made the book a quick read. The graphics were extremely beautiful and interesting. Question : Who is that one person with whom you can have the deepest of conversations?
Three non-fiction recommendations one after the other. Girl, I am on a roll! 😁 @booksteaandmore gifted me this book "Freakonomics" since I am going to B-school for my master's and I have been going gaga over it. I never knew understanding economics applied to real world could be this fun. Starting from drug cartels to Ku Klux Klan, to parenting children, this book has it all but from a purely economic perspective. It talks about how incentives shape up most of what we do in life, whether it is emotional incentive, financial or social. The best thing about this book is that it has taught me so many anecdotes and new facts that I can actually apply them in my life. Just the kind of book I need before I go off to college. Need some more B-school related non fiction recommendations. Keep them coming. ❤ P.S. thanks to my gorgeous office buddy @kr_puja for being her gracious self as always in my photographs
